Construction deaths at 10 year high

Date: 05/07/2019

RNZ National has reported that construction workplace deaths are at their highest level for a least a decade.

Chief Executive of WorkSafe, Nicole Rosie, says the number are alarming.

Six of the 11 fatalities, to date, involved vehicles.

Brendan McLean, Vanguard Head of Sales says every effort is being made to improve New Zealand’s workplace safety culture and to introduce technology that will help turn the tide.

He says health and safety managers are aware of the issues and are doing their best but some are still coming up against internal resistance, which is alarming. Vanguard is introducing new technology which will help, particularly with traffic control, across the sector in addition to the tools currently available. Brendan says more information can be expected within months, pending approvals.
