Did you know, falls due to slips and trips result in thousands of injuries every year?

With Winter starting to bite, decks and paths can quickly become an unseen danger. Good housekeeping is the first and most important level of preventing falls due to slips and trips. Here's 8 top tips:

1. Clean all spills immediately
2. Mop or sweep debris from floors
3. Remove obstacles from walkways and always keep them free of clutter
4. Secure (tack, tape, etc.) mats, rugs and carpets that do not lay flat
5. Always close file cabinet or storage drawers
6. Cover cables that cross walkways
7. Keep working areas and walkways well lit
8. Replace used light bulbs and faulty switches

Here are the most common causes for slips and trips:

  • Wet or oily surfaces
  • Occasional spills
  • Weather hazards
  • Loose, unanchored mats and cables
  • Flooring or other walking surfaces that do not have same degree of traction in all areas
  • Uneven edges in flooring
  • Opened drawers
  • Untidy tools or cables from electrical equipment
