This video provides a practical overview of our ULTRAFLEX Delineator — a flexible post and base system used for traffic separation and lane delineation across a wide range of environments.
If you’d prefer to read rather than watch, here’s what you need to know.
Where the ULTRAFLEX Delineator is used
You’ll see the ULTRAFLEX post used in a variety of applications, including:
-
Temporary traffic management
-
Road safety improvements
-
Cycleway separation
-
Urban or CBD environments
-
Hazard delineation (e.g. slips, dropouts, closures)
It’s designed to provide clear visual guidance while being able to withstand regular vehicle impacts.
Colour options and typical use cases
The ULTRAFLEX Delineator is available in three colours, each commonly used in different environments:
-
Orange – Typically used for temporary traffic management (e.g. cordoning around slips or road dropouts).
-
Yellow – Commonly used for longer-term or permanent road safety improvements.
-
White – Often selected for more aesthetic environments, such as cycleways or CBD areas.
Colour selection should reflect the purpose and setting of the project.
Flexible polyurethane construction
The post is made from polyurethane, a fully flexible material designed to handle repeated vehicle impacts.
It is tested to withstand 100 impacts at 100km/h.
When struck by a vehicle, the post bends down toward the road surface and then returns to its original shape. This reduces damage, minimises maintenance, and avoids the need for constant replacement.
How it compares to cheaper alternatives
The main difference is material quality and durability.
Lower-cost posts may look similar, but they typically:
-
Withstand fewer impacts
-
Fragment or tear over time
-
Require more frequent replacement
Investing in a durable post reduces long-term maintenance and replacement costs — particularly in high-impact environments.
Limitation to consider:
This is primarily a visual delineation device. If your project requires more physical separation or vehicle containment, our ULTRAFLEX Separator System may be more appropriate.
What comes in the box?
Each ULTRAFLEX Delineator is supplied with:
-
One 900mm high flexible post
-
One mounting base with four fixing points
-
One connecting/locking pin
How the post connects to the base
-
The arrows on the post align with the pin slot.
-
The post is inserted into the base.
-
The locking pin is driven in with a hammer.
Once installed, the pin prevents the post from pulling out of the base when impacted by vehicles.
Installation options: Temporary vs Permanent
The ULTRAFLEX system can be installed for either short-term or long-term applications.
Temporary installation (weeks to a few months)
For short-term projects, a butyl pad (also known as a bundy pad or tar pad) is used:
-
Peel off the backing layer.
-
Heat with a heat gun.
-
Apply to the road surface.
-
Remove the top layer backing, heat again.
-
Fix the post and base into position.
This allows for removal when the project ends.
Permanent or longer-term installation
If installation exceeds a few months, mechanical fixings are recommended for durability:
-
M10 x 75mm concrete screws, or
-
M10 x 75mm asphalt coach screw and plug
Mechanical fixing improves stability and longevity in permanent settings.
When to consider a more physical separation option
If your project requires something more substantial than visual delineation, you may want to consider Vanguard’s ULTRAFLEX Separator System.
This system uses the same flexible delineator post but mounts it within a rubber base to provide more physical separation between traffic flows.
Need help choosing the right delineation device?
Different environments require different levels of separation, durability, and visual impact.
If you’re unsure whether the ULTRAFLEX Delineator — or a more physical system — is right for your project, our team can help you assess the best option for your specific site.
