Challenge

As part of a national AdBlue tank installation programme, BP Brisbane needed a reliable way to protect a newly installed 3,000L tank from heavy vehicle impacts.

In busy service stations, trucks regularly manoeuvre through tight refuelling areas, making accidental collisions an ongoing risk. Traditional bollards can bend or tear out of the ground when struck, often causing damage to concrete foundations and underground infrastructure. The result is costly repairs, ongoing maintenance and unnecessary disruption to site operations.

BP needed a protection system that could withstand heavy vehicle impacts while avoiding the need for extensive civil works during installation.

Assessment

Vanguard worked closely with the BP project team to understand the operating environment and the types of vehicles using each site.

Rather than recommending a conventional surface-mounted bollard, we identified the need for a solution that could absorb significant impact forces without damaging the surrounding concrete. Just as importantly, it needed to be installed quickly to minimise disruption to live service station operations.

Solution

Vanguard supplied SlowStop Bollards to protect each corner of the AdBlue tank.

Unlike traditional bollards, SlowStop’s rebounding steel design absorbs impact energy without being torn from the ground. Using the largest 168mm option, the system provides industry-leading protection for heavy vehicle applications while requiring no excavation or underground works, allowing for a fast, straightforward installation.

The result is a robust protection system designed specifically for demanding environments where trucks and other heavy vehicles operate every day.

Outcome

The SlowStop Bollards provide long-term protection for BP’s AdBlue infrastructure while significantly reducing the likelihood of ongoing repairs associated with damaged bollards and surrounding concrete.
